- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 ID commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for July 2025
Driving combination vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, in Idaho requires passing the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test (in addition to other steps). The knowledge test is one of several requirements for a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Without it, you cannot operate vehicles that tow trailers with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,000 pounds when the total combination exceeds 26,001 pounds (Idaho Commercial Driver’s License Manual).
In addition to the knowledge test, Idaho requires successful completion of Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). Upon successful completion of the ELDT, a skills test must also be passed (in a representative combination vehicle).
The Idaho Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, at least 16 of which must be answered correctly to pass. If you do not pass, you must wait at least one business day and pay a retesting fee for each subsequent attempt. Of course, with our scientifically designed set of practice tests, you won’t need to worry about that!
Our Free Idaho CDL Combination Practice Test mimics the real test format using questions based directly on the most recent CDL Manual. The test includes immediate feedback and hints to speed learning and help you retain material and concepts. Topics include safe driving practices specific to combination vehicles (including preventing trailer skids and jackknifes), air brake systems in combination vehicles, proper coupling and uncoupling procedures, and inspection requirements for tractor-trailers.
Earning your Class A CDL in Idaho boosts your marketability in the trucking industry. Major industries requiring this licensure include agriculture and livestock transport, timber and forestry operations, construction and heavy machinery, and long-haul freight and logistics services. Idaho’s major trucking corridors include Interstate 84 (running from Oregon through Idaho to Utah), Interstate 15 (linking southeast Idaho to Montana and Utah), and US Highway 95 (a north-south route through rural regions). Major employers in the region that require combination-qualified drivers include Swift Transportation, Lamb Weston, Challenger Pallet & Supply, and FedEx Freight. With so many organizations dependent on this expertise, you are wise to add this to your licensure!
Most Idaho tractor-trailers have air brakes, so you will want to prepare for the Air Brakes Knowledge Test in addition to the Combination Test. Without this, your CDL will carry a restriction that prohibits you from operating air brake-equipped vehicles. Our specialized Idaho practice tests ensure you’re fully prepared for every exam!
