Before you can begin a commercial driving career in Illinois, you must complete the licensing process and get a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Aspiring drivers who will be engaged in so-called “non-excepted commerce” must complete a DOT medical exam. You will also need to pass a vision test, provide identification documents, and pay the licensing fees. The official general knowledge exam will evaluate your understanding of pre-trip inspections, cargo handling, hours-of-service rules, and your responsibilities as a commercial driver. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass, leaving little room for error.
To expand your career opportunities, you should also pass the official air brakes knowledge exam. Doing so will remove the L restriction from your CDL, allowing you to operate commercial vehicles equipped with air brakes. If you are completely new to commercial driving, the official Illinois Commercial Driver’s License Study Guide (Illinois CDL Handbook 2026) will teach you the basics. You should read its contents multiple times during your learning phase.
Our Illinois CDL Class B Practice Test has 50 questions with multiple answer choices. Since only one answer is correct for each question, you should take your time and think before making a selection. Read every question twice and, if you need help, you can request a hint from our automated assistant. To reflect the latest updates brought by DMV rules and state law, we keep our practice tests up-to-date. This practice test is current for January 2026, so you will always practice with the latest version.
