One of the smartest moves you can make to expand your career opportunities and earning potential is to add the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your North Dakota Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), giving you the authority to transport materials deemed hazardous by the U.S. government. In the Peace Garden State, hazardous cargoes include anhydrous ammonia for farming, petroleum products, crude oil and natural gas from the Bakken Formation, pesticides, herbicides, and a wide range of industrial chemicals. Major organizations like Hess Corporation, Marathon Oil, Tesoro Logistics (now Marathon Petroleum), CHS Inc., and local agricultural cooperatives depend on Hazmat-certified drivers. With demand this strong, the Hazmat endorsement is too valuable to ignore. Without it, an entire category of jobs will be closed off to you.
To earn the endorsement, there are several steps. First, you must complete all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements. Next, you’ll need to apply to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for fingerprinting and a background check. The results from this security threat assessment can take weeks, so you’ll want to strategically use that time to study for the third and final step: the North Dakota DOT Hazmat Knowledge Test. This test covers federal regulations, proper handling and packaging of hazardous materials, quantity limits, and safe transport configurations. It requires a minimum passing score of 80% (North Dakota CDL Handbook 2025). That’s a lot of material and a slim margin for error, and you certainly don’t want to experience any delays or exam retakes. You’ll want to pass the HazMat test on your first attempt, and that’s exactly what our practice tests help to ensure.
