To get a Class A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), you must be at least 18. The licensing process begins with submitting an application at a DMV location, where you’ll pay the licensing fees, pass your knowledge tests, and pass a vision screening. Aspiring commercial drivers who plan to engage in non-excepted commerce must also pass a medical examination. Keep in mind that you won’t be allowed to drive professionally across state lines, carry passengers, or transport hazardous materials until you turn 21.
The Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) allows you to practice driving combination vehicles under the supervision of a full Class A CDL holder.
