The official Tennessee Commercial Driver License Manual (Tennessee CDL Handbook 2025) describes the various aspects of commercial driving theory in detail. Anyone interested in a Class A CDL should read its contents multiple times, focusing on the air brakes and combination vehicles chapters. The official general knowledge test has 50 questions based on this manual. Each question has multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass, leaving little room for error.

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is a federal requirement mandated by FMCSA for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. You must get your ELDT from a provider listed in the Training Provider Registry (TPR) before you can schedule and take the CDL skills tests. Since the Class A CDL lets you drive combination vehicles, you must also pass the official combination vehicles knowledge test as well as the air brakes knowledge test (if you plan to drive trucks equipped with air brakes).

Our Tennessee CDL Class A Practice Test is available online for anyone who wants to study commercial driving theory efficiently. It consists of 94 multiple-choice questions to evaluate your understanding of pre-trip inspections, safe driving practices, and the air braking system. Beginners unfamiliar with commercial driving theory can learn from their mistakes with the help of the detailed explanation provided for each question. This feedback helps you understand the reasoning behind each correct answer. For future reference, we recommend noting this feedback in a notebook or notebook app.
