About this test

5 min to complete
Available in EN and ES

The General Knowledge portion of the commercial drivers license (CDL) test is an hour-long exam given by the Alabama DMV. It is a necessary part of the licensure process and imperative if you want to get either your license to drive any commercial vehicle or an initial learner’s permit (CLP). However, prior to taking the test you also need to make sure you have all of your paperwork in order when you get to the DMV office. They’ll want you to have a few important documents including a valid current driver’s license as well as a medical examiner’s certificate. Also known as a Department of Transportation (DOT) card, these certificates prove that you are healthy enough to work, have to be signed by a licensed “medical examiner” listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. In addition, you need to provide proof of citizenship as well as permanent lawful residency – examples of possible documentation that will work for this include a social security card and birth certificate. After processing you’ll be able to take the exam. The test can be tricky and you’ll need to score at least 40 out of the 50 questions to earn a passing grade. If you fail you’ll unfortunately have to wait until the following day to retake. In preparation, you’ll want to look at a series of practice tests to make sure that you have all the necessary knowledge before heading in. When taking practice tests try to study the official AL state commercial driver’s manual and then apply what you have learned to the tests. The practice exams and the manual provide some of the exact questions that will be on the test, so it is good to have a working knowledge of the manual before you go in.
