Replace or Renew Your Driver License in Rhode Island

In Person

You must renew your RI driver license before it expires. You can renew your operator’s driver license in person at one of the DMV locations. You must renew in person if one of the following is true about you:

1. You are a non-US citizen

2. Your license expired more than 180 days ago

3. Your license is suspended or revoked

Plan of Action

1. Complete the application form. You can download it here.

2. Bring the form and your current license. If your license is lost, check the third page of the application for the list of documents required. If you are a visa applicant, you are required to bring immigration/naturalization documents.

3. Pay the fee of $61.50 for the 5-year renewal. You can pay by cash, money order, checks, and credit card (MasterCard, Discover, Visa, and American Express). You will have to add the $1.50 technology surcharge and a service fee of $1.50 if paid by a credit card.

4. Receive your temporary license.

5. You will receive your permanent license by mail within 45 days. If you don’t receive the license after 45 days, call (401) 462-5862.

If you need to change the address, you will have to do it here before proceeding to renewal.

To renew online, access the Official State of Rhode Island Online Service.

Plan of Action

1. Complete your application online.

2. Pay the fee of $61.50 by card.

3. Your license renewal request will be processed within 3 business days.

4. Your new license will be sent to the address on file within 60 days.

Note that online renewal may be unavailable on Saturday 8:30 PM through Monday 7:30 AM and every day between 6:45 AM and 7:30 AM.
