South Dakota’s Division of Motor Vehicles is responsible for all of the state’s licensing and motor vehicle needs. However, you will not go to the DMV to get your license or title. Instead, you will visit the county treasurer or a licensing office for the Department of Public Safety. These offices provide you with everything that you need regarding licensing, titling, registration and plates.
South Dakota has Driver’s Licensing Offices all around the state. If you don’t want to visit one of the offices, use the e-services to renew your license or ID card. You can also schedule an appointment to take an exam.
Your local county treasurer handles all of your registration, titling, and tag needs. You can get the forms you need for the treasurer on the DMV website, or you can pick them up at the treasurer’s office. Filling them out ahead of time speeds up the process, so it is a good to print them out and complete them before visiting the office.
If you don’t want to visit the county treasurer in person, take advantage of the e-services that are available. As long as you have a valid South Dakota driver’s license, you can use these services.
You can use the online services to:
If you are going to use the e-services, disable your pop-up blockers. Also, use MS Edge, MS IE 10 or greater, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. If you have IE 11, make sure that “compatibility view” isn’t enabled. Otherwise, you will have trouble filling out your online form.
You can reach the North Dakota Division of Motor Vehicles through the mail, email or over the phone.
