The challenges of driving through the steep, winding roads in the Green Mountains or the rural areas of Vermont with their limited road infrastructure are only compounded when the materials hauled are hazardous. The U.S. government has classified certain materials as hazardous and enforced a three-tier requirement for endorsement. The good news is that once the endorsement is obtained, a large sector of new job opportunities becomes available with potentially higher earnings. Simply put, adding the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) endorsement to your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is one of the best ways to expand your career opportunities and boost your earning potential.
In the Green Mountain State, hazardous materials include petroleum products like gasoline and heating oil, agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides, and compressed gasses like propane. Major employers like GlobalFoundries in Essex Junction (semiconductor manufacturing), Cota & Cota in Bellows Falls (fuel and propane distribution), and Dead River Company in White River Junction (propane and oil delivery), rely on certified Hazmat drivers and often pay a premium to obtain drivers with this specialization.
To earn this endorsement, you must first make certain that all of your Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements have been met. Second, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires fingerprinting and a background check, which can take weeks, so we advise you to get this process started early. While you wait, use your time to prepare for the final step: the DMV HazMat Knowledge Test.
If this process seems a bit overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. Yes, the exam covers regulations, substance handling, packaging, quantity limits, and transport configurations, and that’s quite a list. And, yes, passing requires a score of at least 80% on Vermont’s 30-question test (Vermont CDL Handbook 2025). Don’t let this intimidate you. It’s why more opportunities and potentially higher income await on the other side of passing!
Our online practice tests eliminate unnecessary fluff, mimic the official DMV exam format, and provide immediate feedback on each response (versus the wait-until-the-end-for-results method that is much less effective). Additionally, we have other HazMat practice tests. Try out another one here: https://driving-tests.org/vermont/vt-cdl-hazmat-practice-test/.
With your forward momentum on high, check out our other Vermont categories of practice tests, like the Air Brakes Practice Tests and the Combination Vehicles Practice Tests. We have all your CDL testing needs covered!
