To join them, you must go through the licensing process imposed by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office (DMV). A Class L motorcycle license allows you to operate any motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc displacement. A Class M license allows you to ride any motorcycle or motor-driven cycle, regardless of its displacement. Teens aged 16 and 17 must hold a learner’s permit for 24 months to practice under the supervision of a licensed rider aged 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience.
Passing the official 15-question motorcycle knowledge test is a requirement if you’re under 18 and applying for a Class L license. (Otherwise, you may be able to skip the knowledge test if you successfully complete an Illinois rider training course.)
