Adding M endorsement to existing license
Moped/scooter permit (varies by state)
If you’re in the market for a motorcycle permit in Maine, you’re probably aware of the motorcycle knowledge exam. This exam is the first challenge aspiring riders must overcome before they can legally ride a motorcycle, a motorized scooter, or a moped on Maine’s roads. The motorcycle knowledge exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions based on the official DMV motorcycle operator manual (Maine Motorcycle Manual). To pass, you must score at least 80%. We’ll help you build confidence and develop a better understanding of riding theory through an innovative educational tool.
Our Maine DMV motorcycle permit practice tests can significantly boost your learning potential. Each practice test is current for June 2026 and can be accessed directly in the browser. You won’t need any advanced computer skills to reap the benefits of our user-friendly practice tests. For your convenience, we have also removed any timer and made this tool available 24/7. There are several features you can use during your training sessions, including the voice-over function. Once you activate it, an artificial voice will read the questions and answer choices aloud.
Pay attention to the detailed explanation provided with every question. This feedback helps you learn from mistakes, which are common among beginners who are unfamiliar with this subject. We make it possible for anyone to pass the official motorcycle knowledge exam on their first attempt through consistent training with our practice tests. With repetition, you’ll naturally strengthen your knowledge and memorize the correct answer to each question.
However, it is crucial to remember the main goal of this intuitive tool. Although our Maine motorcycle permit practice tests are designed to closely reflect the content and format of the official exam, you should use them to become a safe and responsible rider on Maine’s roads. Receiving a high score and passing the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt should only be a temporary goal. Make sure you master this subject before you hit the road on your brand-new Harley-Davidson.

Maine motorcycle rules to know
Rules that are specific to Maine or often differ from other states
Helmet rule
Maine law requires you to wear a motorcycle helmet if you are under the age of 18, operating under a learner's permit, or passed your on-cycle skill test no longer than one year ago. Your passengers must also wear helmets if they are under the age of 18 or if you are required to wear a helmet.
Eye protection rule
Maine law does not actually require you to wear eye protection. Still, both you and your passenger should wear safety goggles or a face shield, whether or not the motorcycle is equipped with a windshield.
Lane splitting or filtering
Maine law prohibits riding a motorcycle between rows of stopped vehicles.
Passenger equipment rule
A passenger who rides your motorcycle must have his or her own footrests, seat, and helmet.
