The legendary Route 66 starts in Chicago and goes all the way to California. Riders from all over the country gather in Illinois to start an unforgettable road trip on two wheels. To join them, you must go through the licensing process imposed by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office (DMV). A Class L motorcycle license allows you to operate any motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc displacement. A Class M license allows you to ride any motorcycle or motor-driven cycle, regardless of its displacement. Teens aged 16 and 17 must hold a learner’s permit for 24 months to practice under the supervision of a licensed rider aged 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience.

Passing the official 15-question motorcycle knowledge test is a requirement if you’re under 18 and applying for a Class L license. (Otherwise, you may be able to skip the knowledge test if you successfully complete an Illinois rider training course.) We’ll help you ace this exam through an intuitive tool that makes studying easier for those who struggle to understand the various aspects of riding theory. Our Illinois DMV motorcycle permit practice tests are designed to closely resemble the content and format of the official exam. Each practice test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions based on the official DMV motorcycle operator manual (Illinois Motorcycle Manual). Start today and study with this tool as often as your schedule allows. Consistent effort and repetition will increase your chances of passing the official exam on your first attempt.

Remember, riding is a lifelong skill. As you are currently in your learning phase, it is crucial to avoid rushing. Make sure you understand what it means to be a safe and responsible rider in the state of Illinois. Learn from your mistakes, and don’t let them bring you down. We point them out as soon as they occur, followed by a detailed explanation of the correct answer. The freedom of riding your favorite motorcycle is the reward for your dedication to studying this subject, which helps you develop safe riding habits.

Illinois motorcycle rules to know

Rules that are specific to Illinois or often differ from other states

Helmet rule

Illinois no longer has a law requiring persons who ride a motorcycle to wear helmets. In 1969, the state Supreme Court declared the state's helmet law unconstitutional, and no new helmet law has been enacted since.

Eye protection rule

If your motorcycle is not equipped with a windshield, you must wear goggles, glasses, or (best of all) a face shield to protect your eyes. (A shatter-resistant face shield will protect your entire face, including your eyes.)

Permit or endorsement rule

An Illinois motorcycle or motor-driven cycle instruction permit is valid for two years if the applicant is age 16 or 17. Persons age 18 or older are issued a 12-month motorcycle instruction permit after they have met all the requirements for it.

Lane splitting or filtering

A motorcycle needs a full lane width to maneuver safely. A motorcycle should never be ridden between lanes of traffic, even if it looks like there is room.
