To obtain a motorcycle license in Alaska, you must follow the process outlined by the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Applicants aged 16 and older can get a Class M1 license, which allows them to operate any motorcycle with an engine displacement of 50cc or more. While not required for applicants aged 18 and older, an instruction permit is mandatory for minors. You’ll get one by paying the licensing fees, passing a vision screening, and passing the official Motorcycle Knowledge Exam. Minors must also provide parental consent and hold the permit for at least 6 months before applying for a license. (Applicants aged 18 and older must also pass the official knowledge exam.)
The official Motorcycle Operator Manual (Alaska Motorcycle Manual) will be your primary study reference. This handbook covers topics such as safe riding techniques, traffic laws, and emergency procedures. You will also learn how to keep a safe distance from other road users and how to perform a thorough inspection of your motorcycle.
