To obtain a motorcycle license in the Golden State, you must follow a process that depends on your age. Although it is not mandatory, adults aged 21 and older should complete a California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP) training course. After passing this course, you will receive a DL 389 certificate that waives the riding skills test.

Scoring 80% or higher on the official Motorcycle Knowledge Exam and passing a vision test are required for the M1 license. Our Free California DMV Motorcycle Permit Practice Test can help you achieve a passing score on your first attempt. If you don’t wish to complete the CMSP training course, you can obtain the M1 license through the DMV. This process requires you to apply for a permit, pass the official Motorcycle Knowledge Exam, and then schedule and pass the riding skills test.

Young adults aged 18 through 20 must complete the CMSP training course and obtain a DL 389 certificate. They must also obtain a motorcycle instruction permit and hold it for at least 6 months. The CMSP training course waives the riding skills test, but passing the official Motorcycle Knowledge Exam and passing a vision screening are still required. Minors aged 15½ to 17 follow a similar procedure but must complete both Driver Education and Driver Training. Additionally, a parent or guardian must sign the application.

We’ll help you with the theory part of the licensing process by providing you with access to an educational tool designed to boost your learning potential. Our second California DMV Motorcycle Practice Test includes questions similar to those you will encounter at the DMV office. All questions are based on the official Motorcycle Handbook (California Motorcycle Manual), which you should read at least once.

This practice test offers a systematic approach, which is much more effective than traditional study methods. Active learning is still the primary strategy for most students, and 317 other California residents are currently using our practice tests to build the confidence and knowledge they need to achieve passing scores on their first attempt. You can begin your first practice session right away. Dedicate the following weeks to your learning phase and watch your knowledge naturally improve over time.
