Are you considering a change in your career? Perhaps you are just getting started, and the idea of driving heavy trucks has motivated you to take the first step toward becoming a licensed commercial driver. In Delaware, you must be at least 18 to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and drive intrastate. To drive commercial vehicles cross-country, carry hazardous materials, or transport passengers, you must be 21 or older. Applicants must also pass a physical examination by a certified medical examiner and complete the mandatory Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a registered provider listed in the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR). Additionally, you must pass the official CDL permit test, which is a 50-question exam. Aspiring commercial drivers who are interested in certain endorsements must also pass the associated knowledge tests. The final step in the licensing process is passing the CDL skills test, which includes a vehicle inspection, basic control skills test, and road test.
The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) publishes the official Delaware commercial driver license manual (Delaware CDL Handbook 2025). We recommend reading its contents at least once, as it provides essential information on the various aspects of commercial driving theory.
