Did you know that lane filtering is legal in Montana? If traffic is stopped or moving slower than 10 mph, you can ride between lanes to get to the front. This practice is designed to prevent riders from being rear-ended by distracted drivers. While it’s common in Europe and Asia, lane filtering is strictly regulated in the United States. In most states, lane filtering is prohibited, and all motorcycles are legally required to occupy a full lane. If you plan to cross Montana’s borders, please familiarize yourself with the regulations of the states you’ll be riding in.
Please keep in mind that you can take both the official Motorcycle Knowledge Exam and a road skills test during the licensing process. However, many students choose a different path and enroll in the Montana Motorcycle Rider Safety (MMRS) Course, which includes classroom instruction and on-cycle training. Upon passing this course, you will receive a completion card, which waives both the written and road tests.
Safe driving practices are discussed in the official Motorcycle Supplement (Montana Motorcycle Manual), among other topics. Please read this manual multiple times to familiarize yourself with riding theory. This subject is studied by all aspiring riders, and it is your duty to fully master it before you get on a motorcycle. To supplement your learning, we provide you with access to our Montana MVD Motorcycle Practice Tests. They are available online, and you’ll need a compatible device to access them.
You’re about to take the second practice test in this series. It includes questions similar to those you will encounter on exam day.
