Passing the New York Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) General Knowledge Exam is required to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). To pass, you must be prepared for questions about pre-trip inspections. With CLP in hand and a minimum 14-day waiting period, you must then pass the New York Pre-Trip Inspection Test as part of the CDL skills exam for a CDL. This test makes certain that drivers can identify and check critical vehicle components to prevent breakdowns and accidents. Our New York CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Tests cover all necessary topics related to pre-trip inspections and help you ace that part of the knowledge exam.
The CDL skills test is divided into three parts: pre-trip inspection test, basic control skills test, and road test. The federally mandated pre-trip inspection test (regulations 49 CFR § 392.7 and 49 CFR § 396.13) and the other two parts of the test must be passed for a CDL. In New York, if you fail one of the three sections of the skills test, you only need to retake the failed part, as you will receive credit for any segment passed. That credit, however, expires on the date your CLP expires (180 days with one renewal allowed). The New York CDL Manual lists some exemptions for bus drivers. School bus (S) and passenger (P) endorsement applicants may be exempt from the engine compartment pre-trip inspection but will receive “K” (Intrastate Only) and “S1” (School Bus Only) restrictions. These restrictions can be removed by obtaining a new CLP, passing the full CDL road test, and paying all applicable fees before exemption expiration.
You’ll need to memorize the structured inspection method for both the New York CDL General Knowledge Exam and the CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Test. This process includes thoroughly checking the vehicle’s engine compartment, cab controls, lights, tires, brakes, suspension, and cargo securement. You must physically point to, touch, and name each component and explain why it is being inspected.
This practice test is based on the most recent New York CDL manual (New York CDL Handbook 2025) and contains 20 multiple-choice questions to assess your knowledge of pre-trip inspections. Each response elicits detailed explanations, speeding learning and ensuring you pass the official knowledge test on your first attempt.
