- Perfect for first-time and renewal CDL/CLP applicants, and those adding endorsements
- Based on 2025 KY commercial driver's license manual
- Triple-checked for accuracy
- Updated for July 2025
To earn your Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Kentucky, you must pass the Combination Vehicles Knowledge Test (alongside other requirements). This required step leads to your being authorized to operate combination vehicles like tractor-trailers where the gross combination weight rating (GCWR) exceeds 26,001 pounds and the towed unit has a GVWR over 10,000 pounds.
Our Free Kentucky CDL Combination Practice Test is based on the official updated Kentucky CDL Manual and closely mirrors the real exam. You’ll face 20 multiple-choice questions and must answer at least 16 correctly (80%) to pass. The practice test includes real-time feedback and hints you can use to help speed the learning process and improve retention. Covered topics include combination vehicle safety practices, prevention of trailer skids and jackknifes, coupling and uncoupling procedures, air brakes in combination vehicles, and inspection procedures specific to combination vehicles.
In addition to the combination knowledge test, you must also pass a CDL skills test. Before taking this test, you must hold your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days and complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). The skills test must be taken in a representative combination vehicle.
Most combination vehicles are equipped with air brakes, so it is important that you also test to remove the air brake restriction from your license. To avoid license restrictions such as “L” or “Z,” you’ll need to pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test (and your skills test). But don’t worry! We also have Air Brake knowledge practice tests to help you pass on your first attempt.
Additional endorsements you should consider include T (Doubles/Triples), N (Tank Vehicles), H (Hazardous Materials), and X (Tank + Hazardous Materials Combo). Earning these endorsements adds considerable marketability to your license and opens up more jobs for the taking!
Earning a Class A CDL unlocks opportunities across Kentucky’s major sectors: agriculture, coal transport, logistics, and construction. Major freight routes include I-64, I-65, I-71, and I-75, linking drivers to cities such as Louisville, Lexington, and Cincinnati. Employers like UPS and Averitt Express are constantly hiring qualified combination drivers.
With our suite of Kentucky-specific practice tests, you’ll have all the tools you need to pass each official exam with flying colors. Stack your stats with our preparatory resources!
