Pass theory exam
at the DMV
In Nebraska, all drivers, regardless of age, must obtain a learner’s permit before applying for a driver’s license. You must be at least 15 years old for a Type LPD learner’s permit. You must also pass a vision exam and an official written (permit) test on driving theory. You must take the permit test at a DMV office, not online. If you’re under 18, your parent or guardian must come with you to the DMV to provide signed consent when you apply for the permit.
A driver education course is not currently required of drivers of any age, but it is encouraged. To be eligible for a Provisional Operator Permit (POP) once you’re at least 16 years old, you may either successfully complete a driver education course or practice supervised driving for at least 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night. Furthermore, if you successfully complete a driver education course, you won’t be required to take the official driving (road) test. (You must obtain a learner’s permit before starting the course.)
All questions on the written exam are based on information in the official Nebraska DMV driver’s 2025 handbook (Nebraska DMV Handbook (NE Driver's Manual) 2025). The DMV currently publishes versions of this manual in English and Spanish. The English version can be easily downloaded from this webpage in PDF format.
We have also created an audiobook of the English version of the official driver’s manual. It’s formatted as a downloadable series of seven MP3 files, one for each section of the manual: License to Drive; Important Driver Information; Signs, Signals and Markings; and so on. The longest file is Section 1: License to Drive, whose running time is 1 hour, 23 minutes, and 10 seconds. The total running time of this audiobook is approximately 3 hours, 19 minutes, and 41 seconds, so you should be able to go through it in a few days.
We also offer a tool to supplement the official manual: our own permit test study guide (available elsewhere on this website). It will help ensure you’re ready for the big written exam day. It covers how to prepare your body and mind for the test, what documents to take to the DMV, frequently missed exam questions, fees you may have to pay, and tips on taking multiple-choice tests.
If you’re under 18, Nebraska gives you a great reason to take a driver’s education course. Does the prospect of taking the official DMV drive (road) test scare you? Complete a driver’s education course, and you may be able to skip it altogether!
