Dreaming of the day when you can drive yourself to Crater of Diamonds State Park and start digging for diamonds (yes, diamonds!) in their original volcanic source? Or drive to Hot Springs and relax in one of their soothing spas? Or maybe savor the fall foliage from your own car on the Pig Trail Scenic Byway? Wherever you’d like to drive, you’ll need a driver’s license.
To obtain a driver’s license, you must meet a series of requirements, including passing the official 25-question knowledge test. If you’re under 18 or have never driven before, passing this test is also necessary to obtain an instruction permit, which will allow you to practice driving under supervision. The test questions are multiple-choice and based on the official driver’s manual (Arkansas DMV Handbook (AR Driver's Manual) 2026). They cover topics such as traffic laws, road signs, and rules of the road. You will take this test on a computerized kiosk at a State Police testing center. The passing score is 80%. Think it will be easy to pass this test? Not necessarily! In 2016, about 46.6% – nearly half – of applicants failed the Arkansas DMV knowledge test on their first attempt.

What to expect at the DMV

Headlights are required when windshield wipers are running, not just when visibility is low. On wet roads, reduce speed and increase following distance to at least 6 seconds; tire traction begins to drop at highway speeds even in light rain. If the vehicle hydroplanes, release the accelerator smoothly and steer straight - do not brake.
A flashing red signal requires a complete stop and yield before proceeding, identical to a stop sign. A flashing yellow signal means slow down and proceed only when it is safe - it does not require a stop. When a traffic light is out of operation, all drivers at the intersection must treat it as a four-way stop.
If a front tire blows, the vehicle will pull toward the blown tire; steer against the pull and ease off the accelerator before braking. If a rear tire blows, the rear of the vehicle will fishtail; hold the wheel firmly, do not brake, and allow the vehicle to slow on its own before applying gentle braking. Never use cruise control on wet or icy roads.
Arkansas's default speed limit is 55 mph on undivided highways outside of urban areas. In school zones, the speed limit applies when school is in session, children are present, or flashing lights are active - not just during posted hours. Fines in work zones are doubled when workers are present.
Signal at least 100 feet before changing lanes. Passing on a two-lane road is prohibited within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing, bridge, or tunnel. After completing a pass, return to the right lane before coming within 200 feet of oncoming traffic.

Rules that are unique to Arkansas or differ from most other states
All phone use is prohibited for intermediate license holders, including hands-free calls and speakerphone. This is one of the strictest teen phone laws in the US; most states only ban handheld use and allow hands-free options.
Unlike most states that issue a learner's permit for a fixed term (usually 12-24 months), Arkansas ties the expiration of the learner's license to the applicant's 16th birthday. The intermediate license then expires on the 18th birthday. This age-based expiration system is unique to Arkansas.
The Arkansas State Police (DPS) administers knowledge and skills tests at exam stations. The Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) issues the actual license at a separate office. Applicants may need to visit two different locations on their licensing day.
Teens who have graduated (diploma or GED), are married, have enlisted in the military, or have been legally emancipated can skip the intermediate license stage entirely at age 16 and proceed directly to a full license.
