In California, teen aspiring drivers must complete the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. If you’re between 15½ and 17½ years old, you must complete a driver’s education course and get an instruction permit before you may start driving under adult supervision. You must pass a 46-question knowledge exam at the DMV location. After holding the permit for at least 6 months (or turning 18) and completing 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night), you can take the road test to earn a provisional license. Adults 18 and older are not required to complete a driver’s education course, but they must still pass the knowledge and road tests before they can get a license.
Our California Driver’s Handbook Practice Test helps you prepare for the official written knowledge exam. All 20 questions have multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. Please answer them at your own pace and avoid rushing. Too many students end up making avoidable mistakes on exam day due to anxiety. By practicing with this tool regularly for several weeks, you will familiarize yourself with the content and format of the official exam. Our practice test also helps you build the confidence and knowledge to become a safe and responsible driver in California.
The voice-over feature can be activated from the “Test settings” menu on the left side of the page. An artificial voice will read the questions and answer choices aloud, making it easier for you to pay attention and remain focused while studying in busy environments. Students with auditory memory can also benefit from this feature. You can use keyboard shortcuts to control the practice test. These shortcuts allow you to move between questions, select answers, and activate certain features. To view the complete list of keyboard shortcuts available, please use the “Shift + ?” key combination.
Start today and dedicate the following weeks to your learning phase. Study driving theory with the help of our practice test and use it alongside the official California Driver’s Handbook (California DMV Driver's Handbook 2025: Interactive Manual w/Audio). It takes time and effort to master driving theory. With the right tools, however, you can study efficiently and build the confidence to ace the official written knowledge exam on your first attempt.
