In Hawaii, you must pass three official tests for a driver’s license: a vision test, written knowledge test, and road test. Before applying for a license, you must first obtain an instruction permit if you’re under 18 (or your county requires it). You must be at least 15½ to get a permit, and you must pass the vision and knowledge tests. If you’re under 18, you also need consent from a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult.
The Hawaii DMV written test has 30 multiple-choice questions based on the official driver’s manual (Hawaii DMV Handbook (HI Driver’s Manual) 2026). To pass, you need at least 24 correct (80%). The test covers traffic signs and signals, Hawaii traffic laws, the rules of the road, and safe driving practices.
This is the second of our five Hawaii Permit Practice Tests, current for May 2026 and based on the official Hawaii driver’s manual. Topics include driving emergencies, passing, pavement markings, right-of-way rules, road signs, roundabouts, sharing the road, and traffic signals.
