Before you may obtain a driver’s license in Illinois, you must pass a vision exam and a written exam and meet various documentation requirements to qualify for an instruction permit. This credential will allow you to practice driving under supervision.
The written Illinois permit test has 35 questions, all based on the official driver’s manual (Illinois DMV Handbook (IL Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%. If you fail the test, you can retake it, but you can’t take it more than three times per year.

Unfortunately, failing the written test is a real possibility without adequate test preparation. For many aspiring drivers, just reading the official manual a couple of times before the written test hasn’t been enough for them to pass. (In 2020 – 2023, about 40.5% of those who took the written test failed it on their first try.) We have given our users a suite of interactive test preparation tools to help them learn and memorize all the information they need to pass the permit test.
Our audiobook version of the official manual enables you to listen to the text of the manual, even while performing other activities. Our set of Illinois practice tests are based on the official manual and address all the topics it covers, such as the rules of the road and safe driving techniques. Our automated assistant accompanies each practice test. It can give you a hint for a question or an explanation of the correct answer. This Exam Simulator test runs in Simulated Exam Mode, closely resembling official exam conditions: The test consists of 35 questions based on the official manual, just like those on the official DMV permit test. The passing score is 80%, just like the official permit test. Unlike our other practice tests, the Exam Simulator test ends prematurely if you miss too many questions and fail it. There are no hints or other tools to help you answer the test questions. On this test, you’re on your own! The only significant difference from the official written test is that you can retake the Exam Simulator test as often as you like until you feel confident and comfortable about taking the official written test.
