What you need to know

To get a license or permit in Indiana, you’ll need to pass a written knowledge test based on the 2024 Indiana Driver’s Manual. The written exam is made up of two parts, but this BMV practice test will focus only on the road signs portion of the test. There will be 16 road sign questions on your written exam, which will have 50 multiple-choice questions in total. To pass, you’ll need to be able to properly answer 14 of the 16 road signs questions, or you’ll be required to come back another day and try the entire test over again. The manual covers road signs in chapter 4, a topic that encompasses traffic lights and signals, regulation signs, warning signs, and even curbs’ markings. This practice test is particularly important, as you don’t want to have to retake the entire exam, so use it as a valuable study tool. To take the knowledge test, you’ll also need to submit to a vision test, pay a $9 permit fee, provide proof of identity, residence, and social security number, and if you’re a minor, you’ll also need a parent to sign a financial responsibility agreement.
