In Iowa, you must pass the official DOT Permit Test to get your license. The test is based on the official Iowa Driver’s Manual (Iowa Driver’s Manual) and uses the same multiple-choice format as the real DOT exam.
The Iowa DOT written test has 25 multiple-choice questions. To pass, you need at least 20 correct (80%).
This is our second Iowa Permit Practice Test, current for May 2026 and based on the official Iowa Driver’s Manual. Each question has four answer options – click the best one. Optional hints can help with tougher questions (the real DOT test has no hints).
If you miss a question, read the explanation carefully so you don’t make the same mistake on the real test. Take the practice test multiple times to enhance your knowledge – questions will be randomized each time.

Use this second set to check pavement markings plus construction zones after the first permit practice test
This page is online practice, not the official DOT exam. Use it to check pavement markings plus construction zones, then confirm the current IA testing option before relying on an at-home exam.
Iowa allows parents to proctor the official permit knowledge test at home, without requiring the applicant to visit a DMV office. Iowa is one of only a small number of states that permits this for the official government test.
Based on the categories assigned to this second practice test pool.
Treat this as a second read, not a repeat of the first practice test.
This is one of the main areas in this test pool, so review the rule before another scored attempt.
Test 2 changes the question mix so you can separate understanding from memorized answers.
Use Test 3 to confirm that pavement markings plus construction zones no longer pull your score down.
