In Massachusetts, you must pass the RMV written knowledge test to get your learner’s permit and driver’s license. You must be at least 16 years old to test and apply for a permit.
The Massachusetts RMV written test is timed and has 25 multiple-choice questions. You’ll have 25 minutes to answer at least 18 correct (72%). Questions are based on the 2026 Massachusetts Driver’s Manual.
The test is offered on an automated testing system in both English and Spanish, without an appointment, for a $30 testing fee. You’ll also need to provide proof of identity, state residency, and signature, plus a completed application form (with parental signature if you’re a minor). When paying for the permit test, you can also pay for your future driving test at the same time.
Once you have your learner’s permit, drivers under 18 must complete a driver’s education program and 40 hours of supervised driving.
This Massachusetts RMV practice test is current for May 2026 and helps you prepare for the real written knowledge test.

Use this second set to check impaired and distracted driving plus traffic signals after the first permit practice test
This page is online practice, not the official RMV exam. Use it to check impaired and distracted driving plus traffic signals, then confirm the current MA testing option before relying on an at-home exam.
Based on the categories assigned to this second practice test pool.
Treat this as a second read, not a repeat of the first practice test.

Test 2 changes the question mix so you can separate understanding from memorized answers.
Use Test 3 to confirm that impaired and distracted driving plus traffic signals no longer pull your score down.

We mirror recurring themes (e.g., right‑of‑way traps, sign look‑alikes) and use similar distractors and wording styles.
