Have you thought about where you’d like to drive after you get a driver’s license? Would you like to take a scenic drive on the M-22 Scenic Byway or the Lake Superior Circle Tour? Or explore the vibrant nightlife in Ann Arbor, Detroit, or Grand Rapids? Or are you primarily interested in commuting to work or business in agriculture, the automotive industry, or the healthcare sector? To drive to any of those locations, you’ll need to hold a driver’s license.
Before you can apply for a driver’s license in Michigan, you must meet other requirements. If you’re under 18, you will follow Michigan’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. Your first task is to qualify for a learner’s license (commonly known as a learner’s permit) to practice supervised driving. If you’re at least 18 years old and have never held a license, you must apply for a temporary instruction permit so you can also practice supervised driving. One requirement for either of these credentials is to pass an official road sign test and a knowledge test. That’s where we come in.
Here is our fourth Michigan Permit Practice Test. Its purpose is to help aspiring drivers like you pass the SOS knowledge and road sign tests. Just like the official tests, these practice tests are based on the official Michigan driver’s manual (Michigan DMV Handbook (MI Driver's Manual) 2025).
Written in-house by our teamBased on MI Driver Handbook
Questions are created and maintained by the Driving-Tests.org content team following our multi-layer editorial process and updated whenever the MichiganSOS changes its handbook or website information. Official sources we check:
You can start this practice test now. Please read the first test question and its answer choices. Select the best or most complete answer. Our AI Assistant can help you throughout the test session. If you’re unsure of the correct answer, ask the AI Assistant to provide a hint or discuss the question in greater depth. You can also ask it your own questions about driving. If you still miss the practice question, the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
Unfortunately, we can’t create a PDF list of the exact Michigan questions and answers you’ll encounter on your knowledge or road sign test. To assemble a test, the SOS randomly draws test questions from a vast pool of available questions. Only they know which questions they’re including on your knowledge test.
However, we do have two downloadable PDF “cheat sheets” (not for actual cheating, though!): “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” These are the questions most likely to appear on your knowledge and road sign tests respectively. It’s a safe bet that you’ll encounter at least some of them. Each question listed comes with the correct answer, which you should study and memorize.
We know what it takes to pass. And we’ve got the proof.
Driver’s Ed is - nobody wants to set foot inside the SOS. That’s why millions of learners trust us for simple, visual, effective prep.

What we use
Driver handbook • Knowledge‑test/permit overview • Fees & ID requirements • Office/appointment info
How we make exam‑like questions
We mirror recurring themes (e.g., right‑of‑way traps, sign look‑alikes) and use similar distractors and wording styles.
What we don’t do
We don’t collect or publish actual test items and we’re not affiliated with SOS.
