NJ Permit Practice Test 6 2026
Avg. first-try score: 97%
Perfect for:Learner’s permit applicants
First‑time adult applicants
To become a licensed driver in New Jersey, you must pass three tests: a vision exam, a 50-question knowledge test, and a road test. Teen drivers must follow a graduated driver license (GDL) program. This program starts with a special learner’s permit, available if you’re 16 or older. You must enroll in a driver training course and pass the vision and knowledge tests to get this permit. Then you’ll be allowed to drive during daylight hours under the supervision of a licensed driver aged 21 or older. When you turn 17, you can switch to an examination permit and continue your supervised driving practice.
The examination permit is the initial stage for aspiring drivers 17 or older. Before you may take the road test, you must practice supervised driving for at least six months (three months if you’re over 21). After passing the road test, you can get a probationary license, which will allow you to drive unsupervised but with several restrictions for one year. After one year, you can upgrade to a basic license. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission MVC publishes the official driver manual (New Jersey MVC Handbook (NJ Driver's Manual) 2026). This valuable resource describes the various aspects of driving theory, including road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices. Read its contents at least once, and when you’re ready, give our practice tests a try.
