In New York, all drivers, regardless of age, must obtain an instruction permit before applying for a driver’s license. Requirements include being at least 16 years old and passing both a vision test and a written knowledge test. If you’re under 18, you also need signed consent from a parent or guardian.
You may take the New York DMV written test online or at a DMV office. If you’re a high school student, your school may also be authorized to administer it. The test has 20 questions based on the official New York DMV driver’s manual (New York DMV Handbook (NY Driver’s Manual) 2026). 4 of those 20 questions are about road signs – you must get at least 2 of the 4 right, plus a 70% overall score.
This is our second New York Permit Practice Test, current for June 2026 and based on the official driver’s manual. Like the official test, it’s multiple choice. Each question has several answer options – pick the best or most complete one.
If you’re stuck, our AI Assistant can rephrase the question, give a hint, or answer your own questions about driving. You can retake the test as often as you want; questions will be randomized each time. We also offer a New York Permit Test Study Guide with document checklists, fees, and frequently missed questions.

Test 2 changes the question mix so you can separate understanding from memorized answers.
Use Test 3 to confirm that traffic signals plus pavement markings no longer pull your score down.
