To get your South Dakota driver’s license, you must pass the official DMV written knowledge test, which covers South Dakota’s rules of the road and safe driving practices. All aspiring drivers, regardless of age, must pass this test. If you’re under 18 or need supervised practice, the knowledge test is also required for an instruction permit.
The South Dakota knowledge test has 25 questions based on the official driver’s manual (South Dakota DMV Handbook (SD Driver’s Manual) 2026). The passing score is 80% (20 correct). Reading the manual alone often isn’t enough – reportedly 70% of applicants failed on their first try.
This is the second of our five South Dakota Permit Practice Tests, current for May 2026 and based on the official driver’s manual. Choose the best or most complete answer for each question.
Our AI Assistant can rephrase questions, supply hints, or explain answers. We also offer a South Dakota Permit Test Study Guide with document checklists, fees, and tips for the test day.

Use this second set to check turning and u-turns plus construction zones after the first permit practice test
This page is online practice, not the official DMV exam. Use it to check turning and u-turns plus construction zones, then confirm the current SD testing option before relying on an at-home exam.
Based on the categories assigned to this second practice test pool.
Treat this as a second read, not a repeat of the first practice test.

Test 2 changes the question mix so you can separate understanding from memorized answers.
Use Test 3 to confirm that turning and u-turns plus construction zones no longer pull your score down.
