Free Online DMV Written Test Practice for Virginia (2025)
If you’ve never held a driver’s license before, you’ll have to devote time and effort to obtaining a Virginia driver’s license. No one else can do this for you, not even us. (We don’t issue licenses.) What we can do is help you meet one of the most crucial requirements: passing the official Virginia DMV written knowledge test. This test covers traffic signs, safe driving techniques, and Virginia’s motor vehicle laws. (The passing score is 86%.)
Our practice tests and other tools will ensure you pass the official DMV written knowledge test on your first try. This is one of our tools: our second Virginia DMV Permit Practice Test. Like all our other permit practice tests, it’s designed to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test. Like the official knowledge test, this practice test is up to date as of May 2025 and based on the official Virginia driver’s manual (Virginia DMV Handbook (VA Driver's Manual) 2025). All 20 questions on this practice test are multiple choice. You must choose the best or most complete answer for each question.
The Progress Bar will keep track of your score as you go through the test. When you get a question right, it will turn green. If you miss a question, it will turn red. Baffled by a question? Ask our AI Assistant to elaborate or give you a hint. You can also ask the Assistant about any other aspect of driving. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will show you the correct answer and an explanation. Disappointed by your final score? You can retake this practice test as often as you wish until you master the material. Each time, the order of the questions will be randomized.
In addition, we have two downloadable PDF “cheat sheets” (quick references; not for actual cheating!): “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter some of these questions on your official knowledge test. Each “cheat sheet” includes the correct answer for each question listed. Please study as many of these as you can.
Feeling nervous that you might forget something or freeze up on the day of your official knowledge test? That’s why we also created our own Virginia Permit Test Study Guide to ensure you’ll be ready for the big test day. It covers how to prepare your mind and body for the test, what documents to have with you, what fees you’ll probably have to pay, and other last-minute tips.
