Free DMV Written Test Simulator for District of Columbia | Updated for 2025
The District of Columbia isn’t just the focus of American political activity. It also boasts a vibrant nightlife. Adams Morgan is famous for its arts, entertainment, and restaurants. The U Street Corridor is known for its African American heritage. Other engaging social experiences can be found in Penn Quarter and Dupont Circle. Then again, if you’re a long-time resident of DC, you may have experienced all those already. In that case, get a driver’s license, and you’ll be able to drive anywhere else you wish.
In the District of Columbia, all drivers, regardless of age, must obtain a learner permit to practice supervised driving before they may apply for a driver’s license. A key requirement for obtaining a learner permit is to pass an official DMV written knowledge test on safe driving.
The District of Columbia DMV written test is based on information contained in the official District of Columbia driver’s manual (District of Columbia DMV Handbook (DC Driver's Manual) 2025). Therefore, you should start preparing for the knowledge test by studying this manual. However, this alone may not prepare you well enough. (In 2022, about 47.3% – nearly half – of those who took the knowledge test failed it on their first attempt.)
We have created learning tools to supplement the official driver’s manual. This is our second District of Columbia Permit Practice Test. Like our first permit practice test, it’s intended to help aspiring drivers like you pass the DMV knowledge test on their first try. Like the official knowledge test, these practice tests are up to date as of May 2025 and based on the official District of Columbia driver’s manual.
Watch the Progress Bar to keep track of your score in real time. Choose the best or most complete answer for each question. If you get stuck on a question, ask our AI Assistant to discuss it or give you a hint. You can also ask your own questions about driving. When you get a question right, the question number will turn green. If you miss a question, the question number will turn red, and the AI Assistant will give you the correct answer and an explanation.
Finally, check out our own District of Columbia Permit Test Study Guide to help you get ready for the day of your official written knowledge test. It addresses how to prepare mentally and physically to ace the test, what documents to have with you on the test day, what fees you may have to pay, and which test questions are frequently missed.
