In Idaho, if you are under 17, you must obtain an instruction permit to practice driving under supervision before taking the skills test. Requirements include being at least 14½ years old and passing the official vision and knowledge tests. If you’re under 18, your parent or guardian must sign consent and you must provide proof of high school attendance or graduation. If you’re under 17, you must also complete an approved driver’s education course.

If you’re 17 or older, driver’s education isn’t required and a permit is optional, but you must still pass the vision and knowledge tests before the skills test.

The Idaho DMV written test covers traffic signs and signals, Idaho traffic laws, and safe driving practices. All questions come from the official Idaho driver’s manual (Idaho DMV Handbook (ID Driver’s Manual) 2026). The passing score is 85% (34 of 40 correct). Reading the manual alone may not be enough – in 2020-2023, about 34.9% of applicants failed on their first attempt.

This is our second Idaho Permit Practice Test, current for May 2026 and based on the official Idaho driver’s manual. Our AI Assistant can give hints, rephrase questions, or answer your own driving questions. We also offer an Idaho Permit Test Study Guide with document checklists, fees, frequently missed questions, and other last-minute tips.

How to use Idaho Test 2

Treat this as a second read, not a repeat of the first practice test.

1

Start with Traffic Signals

This is one of the main areas in this test pool, so review the rule before another scored attempt.

2

Use fresh wording for ID rules

Test 2 changes the question mix so you can separate understanding from memorized answers.

3

Move to Test 3 after repeat misses drop

Use Test 3 to confirm that traffic signals plus highway driving no longer pull your score down.
