Avg. first-try score: 84%
Perfect for:Learner’s permit applicants
First‑time adult applicants
In Indiana, aspiring drivers must pass a vision test and a 50-question knowledge exam before getting a learner’s permit. Teen applicants between 15 and 16 must also be enrolled in a state-approved driver education course. Underage applicants 16 or older can take the knowledge test and vision screening at the BMV location to receive a learner’s permit without completing a driver education course.
With a permit, the learner driver can practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver at least 25 years of age or a licensed spouse aged 21 years or older. 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night) are mandatory for all applicants. Your driving supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat, ready to intervene if something goes wrong.
If you’re under 21, you must hold your learner’s permit for 180 days. Once you pass the skills test, you’ll be eligible for a probationary driver’s license. If you’ve completed a state-approved driver education program, you can apply at age 16 and 90 days. Without driver education, you must be at least 16 years and 270 days old to apply.
