In Massachusetts, you must obtain a learner’s permit before you may apply for a driver’s license. To obtain a learner’s permit, you must meet a series of requirements. First, you must complete an application and submit it at an RMV Service Center. (Your parent or guardian must sign it if you’re under 18.) Also provide your Social Security number, proof of your citizenship or lawful presence in the United States, and proof of your Massachusetts residency. Pay the appropriate fees. Then you must pass a vision exam and a learner’s permit exam.
The Massachusetts learner’s permit exam has 25 questions based on the official driver’s manual (Massachusetts RMV Handbook (MA Driver's Manual) 2025). The exam tests your knowledge of Massachusetts motor vehicle laws and safe driving practices. It has a 25-minute time limit, and the passing score is 72%.
Unfortunately, failure happens all too often. The RMV reported that in 2022, about 30% of applicants – nearly one-third – failed the Massachusetts learner’s permit test.
To ensure that aspiring drivers like you pass, we’ve created a test preparation program with a suite of interactive test preparation tools to help you learn and memorize all the information you need to pass the permit test.
