You must meet several requirements to obtain a driver’s license in Mississippi. Importantly, you must pass a vision exam and a computerized (“written”) knowledge test and meet various documentation requirements, including proof of school enrollment, to qualify for a learner’s permit to allow you to practice driving.
The knowledge test has 30 questions based on the official driver’s manual (Mississippi DMV Handbook (MS Driver's Manual) 2026). The passing score is 80%. You are not allowed to use any “cheat sheets” or other aids during the test. If you’re reading impaired, you may use the available headset to listen to a voice reading the questions to you.
Once you obtain a learner’s permit, you may apply for a Class R regular driver’s license after you complete 50 hours of safe driving and either (a) turn 17 or (b) turn 16 and hold the learner’s permit for at least one year. (A driving or road test is no longer required in Mississippi.)
However, if you fail the knowledge test, you may retake it on the next business day. If you fail it after your third attempt, you must wait 30 days before you may try it again.
