To obtain a North Carolina driver’s license, you must be at least 16 years old and pass four official tests: a vision test, traffic signs test, written knowledge test, and road skills test.

If you’re under 18, you must first obtain a learner’s permit (Level 1). Your permit allows supervised driving practice. You must be at least 15 for a permit, and you’ll need to pass the vision, traffic signs, and knowledge tests. If you’re 18 or older, a learner’s permit is optional – useful if you need supervised practice before the skills test.

All questions on the North Carolina DMV written test and traffic signs test come from the official driver’s manual (North Carolina DMV Handbook (NC Driver’s Manual) 2026). The written test has 25 multiple-choice questions – you need at least 20 correct (80%). The road signs test requires identifying signs by color and shape; you can miss no more than 2.

This is the second of our five North Carolina Permit Practice Tests, current for May 2026 and based on the official driver’s manual. Choose the best or most complete answer for each question. Our AI Assistant can give hints or explanations if you get stuck. We also offer a North Carolina Permit Test Study Guide covering documents, fees, and tips for the test day.
