Obtaining a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) is the first step in Ohio’s graduated licensing system. Your TIPIC will allow you to practice driving under supervision. To obtain a TIPIC, you must be at least 15½ years old, pass a vision screening and a knowledge test, and provide the necessary documents. Aspiring drivers under 21 must complete 24 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor. After holding a TIPIC for at least 6 months and completing 50 hours of supervised driving, applicants under 21 can schedule and take the road skills test. Upon passing the road skills exam, you’ll be granted a probationary license that allows you to drive alone with several restrictions. Adults follow a similar licensing process, but they don’t have to complete a driver education course or hold their permit for any minimum amount of time. After obtaining a TIPIC, applicants 18 and older can take the driving test as soon as they feel confident in their driving skills.
