Earning the privilege to drive in South Dakota begins with passing the South Dakota DMV Written Permit Test and vision screening to obtain an Instruction Permit. In South Dakota, you must be at least 14 years of age to be eligible to apply. The knowledge test measures your understanding of traffic laws and safe driving practices as outlined in the state driving manual. You are allowed three attempts within a six-month period for each testing fee paid. If you fail, you may not retest until the next working day. Our South Dakota DMV Written Permit Test Questions & Answers Practice Tests are designed to ensure you conceptually understand all the material needed to pass the exam on your first attempt. This level of understanding is achieved through our trademarked Challenge Bank of questions, which remembers any missed and recycles them into the queue until you prove mastery. Other features in our practice tests include interactive driving manuals, end-of-session overviews that highlight areas needing extra study, and AI-powered responses for each question. These features help you learn as you go, instead of being bombarded with corrections at the end of a session. For drivers under 18, the Instruction Permit is the first step in South Dakota’s graduated driver licensing (GDL) program. Minors must hold the Instruction Permit continuously for 275 days before upgrading, or 180 days if they have successfully completed an approved driver education course with a score of 80 percent or better on both the written and driving portions. While driving, the minor must be supervised by a parent, legal guardian, or another licensed adult who has at least one year of driving experience and is seated in the front passenger seat. In addition, minors must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours in inclement weather and 10 hours after dark.
After meeting these requirements and passing the driving test, a minor may apply for a Restricted Minor’s Permit, provided there have been no traffic convictions in the previous six months. Applicants age 18 and older must also begin with an Instruction Permit and pass the vision and knowledge tests. With an Instruction Permit in hand, they do not need to meet the GDL timing requirements and can upgrade to a full license once they pass the driving test.
