The process of driver licensing in the Volunteer State starts by passing the Tennessee DMV written Permit Test and the vision screening. Doing so allows you to obtain a learner permit and begin supervised behind-the-wheel practice with a qualified adult. You must be at least 15 years old and attain a minimum passing score of 80% on the knowledge test. The knowledge examination is based directly on the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual and measures your understanding of traffic laws, safe driving practices, road signs, and responsible vehicle operation. If you do not pass the knowledge test, you may face additional fees and delays. Our Tennessee DMV Written Permit Test Questions & Answers Practice Tests are a great way to avoid fees and delays and ensure you pass your official exam on the first attempt.

The official test questions are phrased so you must apply real-world decision making to answer them correctly. This requires a conceptual understanding of the material and study methods that exceed simple memorization (such as what you might achieve with static pdfs and printed study guides). Questions cover the right of way at intersections, proper lane usage, traffic control devices, work zones, railroad crossings, school bus laws, speed regulations, distracted driving, and the effects of alcohol and drugs. Our interactive practice tests provide AI-powered responses for each question, so you learn as you go, rather than receiving a lot of corrections at the conclusion of your practice session. Questions are organized in a Challenge Bank™ that remembers any missed responses and cycles them until you answer correctly. Ace this practice test and try another: https://driving-tests.org/tennessee/tennessee-permit-practice-test/.

If you are under 18, the Learner Permit is the first stage of Tennessee’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) system. With a learner permit, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and seated beside you. Before advancing to the Intermediate Restricted License stage, you must hold the permit for 180 days and meet all GDL requirements. These include at least 50 hours of supervised driving experience, including required nighttime driving, as documented on the state form. If you are 18 or older, you must pass the vision screening and knowledge test, but you are not subject to the GDL stages.
