Before you are issued a learner license, you must be at least 15 years old (but not more than 18), have completed the classroom portion of an approved driver education course, and pass the Texas DMV written Knowledge Exam as well as a vision screening. These requirements apply to teens entering the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. (If you are 18 years of age and older, you must meet testing and driver education requirements, but are not subject to the full GDL program.) Passing the knowledge examination requires a minimum score of 70%. Successful completion of certain courses may waive this knowledge exam. Because of the difficulty and amount of material covered on the official exam, our team of experts has crafted a series of Texas DMV Written Permit Test Questions & Answers Practice Tests to help ensure you pass on your first attempt.
The Lone Star State Knowledge Exam requires you to apply rules about right of way at intersections, recognizing traffic signals and pavement markings, obeying school bus laws, adjusting speed to conditions, sharing the road with trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians, and understanding Texas laws on distracted driving and intoxicated driving. Our Practice Tests feature photorealistic questions that mirror the structure and tricky wording of the official exam, as well as AI-powered responses to help you learn as you go. At the end of each practice session, you will receive an overview with suggestions for improvement. Our Challenge Bank™ remembers missed questions and places them back in your queue until answered correctly. Once mastered, try another practice test: https://driving-tests.org/texas/texas-permit-practice-test/.
The learner license allows you to practice driving only when supervised by a licensed driver at least 21 years of age who has at least one year of driving experience. The supervising driver may not be intoxicated, asleep, or distracted, and must sit in the front passenger seat beside you. The learner license expires at age 18. This learner license is Phase One of the GDL program and must be held for at least six months before the driver qualifies for a provisional license under Phase Two. Applicants who are 18 or older and wish to practice driving before taking the road test are issued a Class C license with restrictions. While adult applicants are not subject to the full GDL structure, they must still pass the exam and, if under 25 years of age, complete an approved driver education course.
We also provide topic-specific practice tests for major parts of the exam: our Road Signs Practice Test and our Fines and Limits Practice Test.
