How to study (step by step)

  1. Start your application

    At age 14 or older, begin your application online with the Iowa DOT. (Parental/guardian consent required if under 18.)

  2. Take the Diagnostic Test

    See your baseline score and what needs review.

  3. Practice Tests (At least 2–3 sets)

    Complete at least 2–3 sets. Short 10-minute sessions work best.

  4. Clear your mistakes

    Review missed questions in the Challenge Bank and correct them all.

  5. Practice exam simulator

    Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher.

The Iowa permit test has 25 questions. You must get 20 correct (80%) to pass.
