- Start your application
Begin your application online with the New Jersey MVC. You must be 16 or older if enrolled in a driver training course; 17 or older otherwise. (Parental/guardian consent required if under 18.)
- Take the Diagnostic Test
Check your baseline so your practice is focused.
- Practice Tests (At least 2–3 sets)
Complete at least 2–3 sets. Short 10-minute sessions work best.
- Clear your mistakes
Open the Challenge Bank and fix every missed question, then repeat the ones you miss again.
- Practice exam simulator
Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher.
- 3–5 short study sessions per week
- 80–120 total practice questions
- Drive with a supervising driver 21+ with several years of licensed experience.
- Follow all GDL rules and avoid phone use.
NJ MVC permit test - what to expect
The New Jersey permit test has 50 questions. You must get 40 correct (80%) to pass.
- Where: Any New Jersey MVC office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof + permit/license fee (see checklist)
- If you fail: Retake in 7 days.
- Commonly missed: legal blood alcohol limits and DUI rules, road sign recognition (warning, regulatory, and guide signs).
