Free Ohio Driver’s Handbook Practice Test (2026)
Avg. first-try score: 75%
Perfect for:Learner’s permit applicants
First‑time adult applicants
Ohio employs a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program for aspiring drivers. Teen applicants must be 15½ to qualify for a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC), which is issued after passing a vision screening and the official written knowledge test. Twenty-four hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training are mandatory for applicants under 21 years of age. With a TIPIC, they can practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver aged 21 or older, but they must follow several restrictions. To be eligible for a road exam, they must log 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night) and hold a TIPIC for at least 6 months.
Adult applicants follow a straightforward process. Driver’s education, although highly encouraged by the BMV, is optional for aspiring drivers aged 18 or older. Driving hours aren’t required in the licensing process, but getting plenty of driving practice is recommended. All conditions for road test eligibility are met after obtaining a temporary permit, and it is up to the applicant to take the skills test as soon as they feel ready.
