Getting a driver’s license in Rhode Island is a structured process that helps new drivers develop their driving skills. The state has mandated a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program for applicants under 18. If you are between 16 and 18, the first requirement is to complete a 33-hour driver education course. This course must be certified by the Community College of Rhode Island, and you must complete it before you start the licensing process. Adults 18 and older do not follow the GDL program and are not required to complete the driver education course.
Once you have your driver education certificate, you can apply for a limited instruction permit. To get this permit, you must pass a 40-question written knowledge test and a vision screening. A passing score of 70% or higher is required for the written exam, leaving little room for error. The test covers road signs, traffic laws, and other aspects of driving theory. You can learn more about this subject from the official Rhode Island Driver’s Manual (Rhode Island DMV Handbook (RI Driver's Manual) 2025). However, there are other resources that can prepare you for Rhode Island’s roads more efficiently.
Our Rhode Island DMV Written Test Study Guide practice test can significantly boost your learning potential. It closely reflects the content and format of the official written knowledge test. All 20 questions have multiple answer choices, but only one is correct. For your convenience, we have omitted any timer from this practice test. Read every question twice and only select an answer when you’re confident of your choice.
Since mistakes are common among beginners, we recommend ignoring your score during your first few attempts. Instead, you should pay attention to the detailed explanation provided for each question. This feedback can help you learn from your mistakes and identify areas that need improvement. Note it down in a notebook or notebook app and revisit the material during future training sessions.
Start today and dedicate the following weeks to studying driving theory. Read the official driver’s manual several times, and practice with our Rhode Island DMV Written Test Study Guide practice test as often as you can. You get unlimited attempts and nonstop access to this intuitive tool so you can prepare for the official written knowledge test even with a busy schedule.
