Must start attending the course within 30 days after applying for the permit.
- Start your application
At age 15 or older, begin your application online with the Illinois DMV. (Parental/guardian consent required if under 18.)
- Take the Diagnostic Test
Get a quick baseline on what you already know.
- Practice Tests (At least 2–3 sets)
Complete at least 2–3 sets. Short 10-minute sessions usually work best.
- Clear your mistakes
Use the Challenge Bank to review and correct every missed question.
- Practice exam simulator
Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher.
- 3–5 short study sessions per week
- 80–120 total practice questions
- Drive with a licensed adult 21+ with at least one year of experience.
- No texting.
IL DMV permit test - what to expect
The Illinois permit test has 35 questions. You must get 28 correct (80%) to pass.
- Where: Any Illinois DMV office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof + permit/license fee (see checklist)
- If you fail: Retake after 24 hours.
- Commonly missed: right-of-way at intersections, distracted driving and mobile device restrictions.
