May enroll in traffic safety course at age 14½ or older. Practice driving under temporary Traffic Education Permit (TEP).
- Start your application
Apply for a regular instruction permit online at age 15 or older (if you completed a state-approved traffic safety course) or at age 16 or older otherwise. (Parental/guardian consent required if under 18.) You must book an appointment in advance.
- Take the Diagnostic Test
Check your baseline and identify the topics you miss most.
- Practice Tests (At least 2–3 sets)
Complete at least 2–3 sets. Short 10-minute sessions tend to work best.
- Clear your mistakes
Open the Challenge Bank and fix every missed question until you stop missing it.
- Practice exam simulator
Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 82% or higher.
- 3–5 short study sessions per week
- 80–120 total practice questions
MT MVD permit test - what to expect
The Montana permit test has 33 questions. You must get 27 correct (82%) to pass.
- Where: Any Montana MVD office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof; fee varies (license fee collected upfront; 3 attempts included) (see checklist)
- If you fail: Retake after 1 day; 3 attempts included per receipt, then repay
- Commonly missed: yielding to pedestrians and bicyclists, headlight usage and when to turn them on.
