- Start your application
At age 15 or older, begin your application with the North Carolina DMV. If you're under 18, you must provide (1) consent from your parent or guardian and (2) either a high school diploma or a Driving Eligibility Certificate showing completion of an approved driver education course.

Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher.
- 3–5 short study sessions per week
- 80–120 total practice questions
- Drive with a licensed adult 21+ in the front seat
- Follow all Level-1 restrictions.
NC DMV permit test - what to expect
The North Carolina permit test has 25 questions. You must get 20 correct (80%) to pass.
- Where: Any North Carolina DMV office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof + permit/license fee (see checklist)
- If you fail: Retake in 7 calendar days.
