- Start your application
At age 15½, begin your application online with the Ohio BMV. (If you're under 18, your parent or guardian must co-sign the application there.)
- Take the Diagnostic Test
Check your starting level and identify weak topics quickly.
- Practice Tests (At least 2–3 sets)
Complete at least 2–3 sets. Short 10-minute sessions tend to work best.
- Clear your mistakes
Review mistakes in the Challenge Bank and correct every missed question.
- Practice exam simulator
Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 75% or higher.
- 3–5 short study sessions per week
- 80–120 total practice questions
- Drive with a licensed adult 21+ in the front seat. There are specific rules on who the supervising adult is allowed to be, depending on your age.
OH BMV permit test - what to expect
The Ohio permit test has 40 questions. You must get 30 correct (75%) to pass.
- Where: Any Ohio BMV office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof + permit/license fee (see checklist)
- If you fail: Retake after next business day.
- Commonly missed: road sign recognition (warning, regulatory, and guide signs), emergency vehicle right-of-way.
