At age 16 or older, begin your application with the Pennsylvania DOT. (Parental/guardian consent required if under 18.) Your health care provider must complete and sign the back.
- Take the Diagnostic Test

Complete at least 2–3 sets. Short 10-minute sessions tend to work best.
- Clear your mistakes
Open the Challenge Bank and fix every missed question.
- Practice exam simulator
Keep practicing until you’re consistently scoring 83% or higher.
- 3–5 short study sessions per week
- 80–120 total practice questions
- Drive with a licensed adult 21+ (or a parent/guardian/spouse with a valid license) in the front seat.
- Seat belts on
- No hand-held phone.
PA DOT permit test - what to expect
The Pennsylvania permit test has 18 questions. You must get 15 correct (83%) to pass.
- Where: Any Pennsylvania DOT office (find locations)
- Bring: ID + SSN + residency proof + permit/license fee (see checklist)
- If you fail: Retake next business day.
- Commonly missed: safe following distance (3-second rule), lane changes and blind spots.
